By 2032, the boundary between humans and machines has been blurred. Section 9, a specialized counter-terrorist unit led by Chief Aramaki and his cyborg officer, Motoko Kusanagi, investigates crimes involving cyborgs. The team encounters a dangerous group known as 'The Awakened,' suspected of hijacking individuals' minds and bodies to carry out state crimes without the victims' knowledge. After capturing one of these individuals, Kusanagi accesses his cyberbrain to uncover the identity of the group's leader. The information she retrieves leads her into a deep exploration of cyberspace, an experience that profoundly affects her.
