Servaine Noxirel recalls stories from her great-grandfather about the former glory of their noble family and the madness that plagued it. Though Servaine finds the story implausible, her return to her family's manor brings an unexpected encounter with Mel, the merman. He believes she is the one who once owned him and has returned.
