In Edo period Japan, a disease known as the Redface Pox has drastically reduced the male population, with seventy-five percent dying within eighty years of its first appearance. As a result, women have assumed roles previously held by men, including leadership positions such as the shogun. Men, now seen as vital for reproduction, are safeguarded, and the most attractive among them are selected to serve in the shogun's Inner Chamber.
