Mitsuha, an orphan who values money, dies after being pushed off a cliff and awakens in a fantasy world. After surviving an attack by wolves, she discovers the ability to travel between this world and her own. Rather than pursue heroism, she focuses on the financial opportunities her situation offers. Using her knowledge from the modern world, she acquires an arsenal of weapons and sets out to earn 80,000 gold. Her aim is to secure the comfortable, leisurely life she has long desired.
