Giovanni no Shima

Two boys, Junpei and Kanta, reside on Shikotan, a small island untouched by the destruction of World War II. Their names come from characters in their late mother’s cherished book, *Night on the Galactic Railroad*, which offers comfort after Japan’s surrender. When Soviet families arrive on the island, Junpei meets Tanya, the commander’s daughter. Despite difficulties in communication and rising hostilities, the children develop an unexpected bond.
