A servant of the French court, Lia de Beaumont is discovered dead in the Seine, her body preserved by mercury and placed in a coffin marked "Psalms." The Church believes her soul is trapped between life and death, unable to reach the afterlife. Her brother, a spy for King Louis XV, becomes determined to uncover the truth behind her murder.
