During the mid-19th century, Japan remained isolated from foreign influence, though early signs of change were emerging under the Tokugawa Shogunate. On the island of Shikoko, a young boy named Ryoma lives in a humble samurai family. He is kind, compassionate, and easily upset by any form of cruelty, even flinching at the suffering of small creatures. His sensitivity leads others to mock him as a crybaby, though he is not afraid to face challenges. His sister is the only one who truly understands him, recognizing his unique nature and supporting him despite the difficulties he faces.
