Saiunkoku Monogatari

A woman of noble descent but without means, Shurei Hong aspires to serve in the imperial court of Saiunkoku, though women are not permitted to hold official roles. The emperor, Ryuki, avoids ruling and leaves decisions to his advisors. Shurei is invited to become a consort to encourage the emperor to fulfill his duties. She enters the palace in this role, but Ryuki has not yet acknowledged her. Rumors suggest that the emperor shares his quarters with male companions. Shurei must devise a strategy to compel the emperor to take responsibility, beginning with locating him.
