During the Ming dynasty, an ancient deity's book containing powerful weapon-making techniques was believed to grant control over the nation. Originally kept by the royal family, it was lost during the Yuan dynasty's rule and later resurfaced among outlaw groups. After the Han people reclaimed power, the book was recovered and placed in the Imperial Palace, but the outlaws knew it was real and sought to steal it. On the ghost festival, three notorious criminals—Hell-fire monk, Hua Daochang, and Duan Yun—tried to retrieve it. The Hell-fire monk succeeded in stealing the book. In response, the emperor established the Imperial Guards, including a young guard named Yuan Xiaotang, and tasked them with capturing the robbers and recovering the deity's book.
