The day after the events from the previous episode, Cosette is working hard labor under the care of the Thénardiers. After sweeping outside the inn, her next assignments for the day include cleaning the tables and polishing the inn's sign. Suddenly, Azelma rushes up to Cosette, wanting to play, but Éponine stops her, stating that their mother forbid them to play with Cosette, and that the two are princesses of the inn, while Cosette isn't. The two girls order Cosette back to work. The confrontation is silenced with the crying of a baby Gavroche. Inside the inn, Mme. Thénardier harshly orders Gavroche to stop crying, at one point kicking at his cradle. When Cosette attempts to speak out against it, she silences herself too late, and Mme.
