Mitsuko, a schoolgirl, stands up for Yu-Lian, a half-Chinese student who has been targeted by bullies. Later that evening, she finds Emily, an antique American doll that was given to a Japanese child in 1921 during a cultural exchange. The doll was concealed during a period of anti-Western sentiment when many such items were destroyed, and it was preserved by a courageous girl who was Mitsuko’s grandmother. The following day, Mitsuko shares Emily’s history during a classroom show-and-tell, using the opportunity to support Yu-Lian.
