Yukito Kunisaki reaches a town intending to earn money for food through his puppet performances. There, he encounters Misuzu Kamio, an unusual resident who invites him to her home by offering food. Following a conversation, she proposes that he reside there. Shortly thereafter, Haruko Kamio, Misuzu's foster mother, comes to the house. Although Haruko initially objects to Yukito's presence, she eventually agrees to let him stay in the shed. This sequence of events establishes Yukito's initial accommodation within the household, marking the beginning of his time in the town alongside the Kamio family members.
