Yona, the sole heir of Emperor IL of Kouka Kingdom, seeks to win her father's affection one week before turning sixteen. She intends to impress her cousin Soo-won and declare her desire to stay close to IL, but the Emperor dismisses her efforts, reserving the right to choose his own successor. During a castle celebration, Soo-won gifts Yona a hairpin and compliments her dawn-colored hair, contradicting her assumptions. Undeterred, Yona attempts to speak with her father again. Upon entering his chambers, she witnesses Soo-won stabbing IL, shattering her world and revealing a shocking betrayal by the person she trusted most.
