Ep. 12: Dragon attacks Mode Warp aircraft, forcing Akamatsu team into wetlands while Asami faces Dr. Umezaki.
Unable to contact Miyako, the Akamatsu Industries team remains with Mode Warp and travels to Dr. Umezaki's laboratory, Asami's last known location. A dragon-like attack kills everyone on the Mode Warp aircraft, including two replacement head divers, before forcing the Akamatsu vessel down in the surrounding wetlands. Most of the team survives, with Kaede, Sakura, Keita, and Hinoki boarding neuronoids while Akamatsu, Li-Chan, and Yamajii guard a device used against worms. Yanagi remains missing, and the search is halted by a massive insect swarm. Meanwhile, Asami wakes imprisoned by Dr. Umezaki, the mastermind behind the creatures disrupting the Algernon search. Though he previously developed new food sources, Asami realizes her friends will soon die and she will become a mindless drone under his control.
