After their vehicle Bessie fails, the group reaches an abandoned mining town where Mama Hitch and her family offer repairs. Serena Hitch kills Philly, while her relatives subdue Sam and Casey. Hitch intends to use Philly as sustenance and clothing, following her pattern of consuming previous visitors. During unconsciousness, Sam recalls the night the Kingdom of Botica fell to a mysterious enemy force on Prince Kelby's birthday. She remembers being separated from him, aware only of his intended destination. This flashback provides context for her past trauma and the loss of her companion during the kingdom's collapse.
