In 1862, during the Bunkyuu Era, Chōshū member Touma Kusaka opposes his clan’s violent Expulsion of Foreigners movement. While preventing arson at the British Embassy, he is aided by Bakufu samurai Keiichirou Akizuki. Years later, Kusaka searches for English instruction despite political tensions. He reunites with Akizuki, who has left his father’s service to study at Nakahama Private School. Akizuki agrees to teach Kusaka English in secret. Their clandestine lessons allow Akizuki to experience commoner life, contrasting with his upper-class upbringing. However, their secret meetings are discovered by a Chōshū member, forcing Kusaka to end their association to avoid conflict between their opposing clans.
