Touma Kusaka seeks English lessons from former rival Keiichirou Akizuki in 1862.
Feb 23, 2007In 1862, during the Bunkyuu Era, Chōshū member Touma Kusaka opposes his clan’s violent Expulsion of Foreigners movement. While preventing arson at the British Embassy, he is aided by Bakufu samurai Keiichirou Akizuki. Years later, Kusaka searches for English instruction despite political tensions. He reunites with Akizuki, who has left his father’s service to study at Nakahama Private School. Akizuki agrees to teach Kusaka English in secret. Their clandestine lessons allow Akizuki to experience commoner life, contrasting with his upper-class upbringing. However, their secret meetings are discovered by a Chōshū member, forcing Kusaka to end their association to avoid conflict between their opposing clans.

Kusaka returns from London to fight in the Boshin War against his lover Akizuki
Mar 23, 2007Kusaka considers leaving his clan until Sufu Masanosuke sends him to London. Before departing, he shares a passionate sexual encounter with Akizuki. During his four years abroad, Akizuki leads his clan and associates with the Shogun. Upon returning to Japan, Kusaka joins the Imperial army in the Boshin War, opposing Akizuki, who fights for the Bakufu. In a final battle, Kusaka discovers Akizuki, who has lost a leg to cannon fire, preparing for seppuku. When a comrade witnesses Kusaka assisting his former lover, Kusaka kills the witness, shocking Akizuki.

Apr 27, 2007Four years later, Kusaka serves the new government in Western-style attire while secretly housing Akizuki. Their bond fractures as Akizuki resents his comfortable hiding while Bakufu comrades suffer imprisonment, leading to his suicidal intent. Aizawa, now a law officer, uncovers the secret and gives Akizuki a tantō. Although Kusaka and Akizuki attempt reconciliation, police led by Aizawa interrupt them. Kusaka returns to find Akizuki gone and a suicide note present. Akizuki crawls through snow to a tree with four trunks, where he ends his life. Kusaka discovers the body and finds a cicada shell from eight years prior in Akizuki's pouch. Overcome with grief, Kusaka takes the tantō and commits suicide beside his lover.
