Ep. 23: Edmond Dantès faces the Count while Haydée confesses her love and Morcerf takes hostages.

After Mercédès and Albert are shot by Morcerf, the confrontation with the Count of Monte Cristo is interrupted by Haydée, who confesses her love. General Morcerf holds Haydée hostage, prompting the Count to order Albert detained as well. Albert pleads for peace, but the Count, fully controlled by Gankutsuou, disobeys orders and shoots Albert. Baptistin shields Albert and is wounded. Albert embraces the possessed Count and kisses his cheek, breaking Gankutsuou’s hold and releasing the spirit. Mortal and bleeding from a shard of Franz's sword in his heart, the Count dies, asking to be remembered as Edmund Dantes. As the group escapes, Morcerf commits suicide to atone for his crimes against those he loved, including Edmond.
