At the event, Albert is given the authority to pardon one of three murderers by selecting a card. He randomly chooses Rocka Buriol, the boastful murderer, causing him surprise and dismay. Seeking distraction, Albert attempts to spend the night with a woman, but she suddenly threatens him with a gun.

Baron Danglars is trapped naked in outer space aboard a drifting ship filled with gold bars. With these adversaries neutralized, only General Morcerf remains to be dealt with. While the Count recounts his backstory to Albert, General Morcerf stages a coup d'etat and declares martial law in Paris, causing massive destruction all over the city.
EP 23Edmond Dantès faces the Count while Haydée confesses her love and Morcerf takes hostages.
Mar 23, 2005After Mercédès and Albert are shot by Morcerf, the confrontation with the Count of Monte Cristo is interrupted by Haydée, who confesses her love. General Morcerf holds Haydée hostage, prompting the Count to order Albert detained as well. Albert pleads for peace, but the Count, fully controlled by Gankutsuou, disobeys orders and shoots Albert. Baptistin shields Albert and is wounded. Albert embraces the possessed Count and kisses his cheek, breaking Gankutsuou’s hold and releasing the spirit. Mortal and bleeding from a shard of Franz's sword in his heart, the Count dies, asking to be remembered as Edmund Dantes. As the group escapes, Morcerf commits suicide to atone for his crimes against those he loved, including Edmond.
EP 24Five years later, peace returns as characters reunite and face their pasts in Marseilles and Paris.

After reflecting at Franz's grave, Albert rushes to a church to hear Eugénie play a song she wrote for him.
