In late May of Space Calendar 801, New Imperial Calendar 3, a refugee ship pursued by Imperial vessels encounters the Julian fleet, prompting an engagement. Both sides eventually commit their full strength, with the Imperial fleet comprising 51,700 ships against the Julian fleet's 9,800. The fleets maneuver cautiously, rotating front-line forces. Mid-battle, Reinhard collapses, causing a communications blackout that frustrates Imperial admirals. Poplan intercepts transmissions between Mittermeyer's ship and Reinhard's flagship. Consequently, the Julian fleet opts to board the Brunhilde using melee infantry to gain an advantage in the escalating conflict.
