While wandering through the forest, Gon comes across a fox-bear. A mysterious man intervenes and kills the adult beast. Gon stops the stranger from killing a fox-bear cub, prompting the man to share information about the Hunter Exam. Gon decides to take the exam once he is old enough and raises the cub in the meantime. This event marks the beginning of the Hunter Exam arc, noted as part 1 of 31.
