Young Gon leaves his aunt Mito to become a Hunter like his father Ging. He proves his worth by catching a monster fish, earning Mito's reluctant approval to pursue his goals. Gon boards a ship with other candidates, including Kurapika, who seeks vengeance against the Phantom Troupe for massacring his clan, and Leorio, who claims to want money but is actually kind-hearted. During a violent storm, the captain reveals himself as an examiner. After Gon saves a crew member who falls overboard, he and the others assist in the rescue. This act of bravery earns the captain's respect, and he transports the trio to the port nearest the exam site.
