Ep. 5: Hisoka navigates the swamp traps while testing Leorio and Gon's worthiness.

A dense fog envelops the swamp during the Hunter Exam, causing many contestants to fall unconscious or die to traps and beasts. Gon and Killua become separated from Leorio and Kurapika, leading to separate monster attacks. Leorio and Kurapika encounter Hisoka, who effortlessly defeats a group of candidates viewing him as a threat. After Leorio and Kurapika flee in different directions, Leorio returns to fight but is severely beaten and knocked out by Hisoka. Gon arrives and strikes Hisoka with a fishing rod to save Leorio. Instead of killing them, Hisoka reveals this was a test and spares them. He carries the unconscious Leorio to the second venue, collaborating with an unknown candidate. Gon finds Kurapika, who witnessed the events, and they proceed to Phase Two. Kurapika analyzes Hisoka’s unique standards for judging opponents, while Gon admits his fear of the magician.
