Many participants drop out after running forty kilometers, but Gon encourages a weary Leorio. Killua meets Gon and notes they are the same age. Kurapika and Leorio discuss their motives: Kurapika seeks revenge on the Phantom Troupe for massacring his clan over their scarlet eyes, while Leorio wants to become a doctor to provide free care, inspired by his childhood friend’s death due to lack of funds. The group reaches the Numere Wetlands, where Satotz warns of deadly creatures. A man claiming to be the real examiner accuses Satotz of being an imposter. Hisoka throws cards at both, killing the man and proving Satotz’s identity as a skilled Hunter. Satotz warns Hisoka against further attacks and leads the candidates into the swamp, stating that losing sight of him means failure.
