Sakon and Kaoruko visit Noh master Kujou to meet Naoto, a senior apprentice and potential arranged marriage partner. Tensions rise within the household due to Kouei, the eldest son and drunkard, who resents his talented half-brother Eimei. On the eve of Naoto’s final performance for the Kujou school, Master Kujou is fatally shot through the head by a crossbow arrow from a distance. Kaoruko begins an investigation into the murder, suspecting everyone present, including the niece Aki and the long-term attendant Tsubota.
