When Ritsuka is twelve, his brother Seimei dies. Soubi, claiming to be Seimei's friend, arrives and declares his love for Ritsuka. Two children of Ritsuka's age, known as the Breathless pair, attack them, but Soubi defeats them effortlessly. Soubi then reveals his true name is Loveless. This revelation triggers Ritsuka's memory of Seimei's true name, Beloved, which Seimei had whispered to him moments before his death. The encounter forces Ritsuka to confront the past and the hidden truths surrounding his brother's final moments and his own identity.
