Conan, Kogoro, and Ran board the overnight North Star Express to Hokkaido to visit a former client. During the journey, they encounter Toshinori Kaetsu, Akishige Ishizuchi, Toru Aoba, Azusa Izumo, Yasuji Asama, and Keitaro Izumo. Yasuji appears to shoot Keitaro in the head and flee through a window. After the train stops, the group discovers Yasuji dead in what looks like an accident. Conan realizes the incident mirrors an unpublished novel by his father, Yusuko, which was stolen ten years ago. Unable to reach Yusuko for confirmation, Conan decides to handle the case independently. Meanwhile, a mysterious woman observes Conan from a distance.
