Kogoro travels to Kagoshima to promote local shochu on a variety talk show. He is subsequently invited by Takakuma Shochu to sample their handmade sake. Tatsumura intends to mechanize sake production, prioritizing quantity over quality. Fumiko tours the city with Kogoro and requests that he refuse Tatsumura's offer to become a spokesperson. Tatsumura later goes missing, leaving behind bloodstains and signs of blunt force trauma suggesting kidnapping. Two days pass before an anonymous tip leads police to find Tatsumura deceased in his car within a park.
