Mouri and Conan inspect costumes for Mouri's role as a chief fireman for one day. They encounter attendees at a costume party, then discover a police car outside a home while walking home. Meeting the costume shop staff, they learn the host has been murdered. Conan deduces the killer manipulated rigor mortis to create an alibi. He gathers sufficient evidence to convict the culprit. The killer confesses that the victim was his controlling girlfriend. This case involves a photograph sent by a clown, which plays a key role in uncovering the truth behind the death and the interference with the body's natural post-mortem changes.
