A renowned magician employs Kogoro to monitor his employees, fearing one intends to kill him. During his first performance, he lies on a bed of spikes and is struck by another, causing Conan and Kogoro concern until he proves unharmed. The subsequent trick fails, trapping him in a sealed water tank. By the time the tank is opened and he is rescued, it is too late. The investigation reveals that one of his workers is responsible for the fatal outcome, concluding the initial phase of the case involving the magician's dangerous stunts and the subsequent tragedy.
