While attending the Ninja Academy at the Hidden Leaf, Hinata declines playtime with her younger sister Hanabi to train with their father. Later, Hanabi observes Naruto scolding a merchant and witnesses her father using Byakugan on Neji to prevent his curse seal activation. The Hyuga Clan's Elder explains the Branch Family's destiny to protect the Byakugan to the young girl. Recognizing Hinata's inadequacy as heir, Hiashi arranges a duel between the sisters to decide the future leader. The battle concludes with Hanabi defeating Hinata, resulting in her father declaring Hanabi the new heiress of the clan.
