Masumi Okuyama, a timpanist who admires Chiaki, becomes jealous of Nodame and harasses her. Mine proposes a contest to see who can secure a date with Chiaki on Christmas Eve. Masumi fails to impress him during practice and is expelled for showing off. Nodame asks Chiaki out while he is distracted, but he later claims he did not agree. Nodame suggests a trio performance with Masumi and Mine. Chiaki eventually recalls giving his consent and seeks them out. He finds them rehearsing a jazz arrangement based on Nodame's memory of his work. He joins the group and insists on late rehearsals on Christmas Eve.
