Sai Shin'ei, a Japanese orphan from China, seeks his family in Japan. Deputy Director Tomii initially mistakes him for a childhood friend but assists him anyway. Sai remembers only a bay landscape and the taste of black sashimi eaten with his rescuers, the Sai family. Tomii tasks Yamaoka with locating Sai's birthplace within a week. Yamaoka and Kurita investigate near Nagai, where Yamaoka recalls locals eating raw kawahagi liver. He has Sai taste it, triggering a memory that confirms his surname is Sekimoto. Tomii verifies his identity as Koichi Sekimoto. At the orphan information center, Koichi unexpectedly encounters his sister Etsuko, who arrived in Japan with other refugees. After forty years of separation, the siblings are tearfully reunited.
