Takeo Gouda is a large, gorilla-like boy who is admired by male peers but struggles with romance. Every girl he likes ends up falling for his best friend, Makoto Sunakawa, who rejects them. After entering high school, Takeo rescues Rinko Yamato from molestation on a train. He punches the attacker at the police station and gets suspended. Grateful for the rescue, Rinko takes an interest in Takeo and bakes treats for him. However, Takeo mistakenly believes she likes Makoto instead. This misunderstanding persists despite Rinko's clear affection for the boy who saved her, highlighting the confusion caused by Takeo's intimidating appearance and his friendship with the more popular Sunakawa.
