Professor Oak tasks trainers Red and Blue with completing the Pokedex for the Kanto region, providing them with a Pokedex and a starter Pokemon. Red selects Charmander while Blue chooses Squirtle. After several battles, Blue defeats Red’s team. A stranger advises Red on the trainer-Pokemon bond and directs him to Viridian City to heal his team. At Pewter City’s Gym, Red encounters the stranger, who is revealed to be Gym Leader Brock. Red’s Charmander struggles against Brock’s Rock-type Geodude, but he defeats it using Nidoran. Brock then sends out Onix, which overwhelms Red’s remaining Pokemon. Understanding the importance of their bond, Red uses Charmander to defeat Onix, earning the Boulder Badge from Brock.
