Becky informs Sara that Lavinia still treats her as a servant, proving she has not learned her lesson. The Headmistress scolds Molly and James for failing to break Sara's spirit. In retaliation, they force Sara and Becky to endure difficult tasks, including shopping trips in the rain where Sara's shoe is crushed by a carriage. Assisted by a soldier while carrying her broken shoe, Sara is then ordered to eat sprouted potatoes alongside Becky.
