Sara and Becky attempt to scavenge for food on a rainy morning but are caught by Molly. The Headmistress is upset because Lottie revealed a prank involving Lavinia, Jessie, and Gertrude. Sara is assigned a rainy-day mail run and discovers a fourpence coin near a bakery, where the baker urges her to purchase bread. After delivering the letter and receiving absolution from a priest regarding self-interest, Sara visits the bakery again. She encounters a street urchin in dire need and intervenes, prompting the baker to offer the child shelter. Consequently, Sara and Becky return to the Seminary still hungry.
