Sara falls asleep reading a French book by Sensei Dufarge and worries about the upcoming meeting with the mayor. The Headmistress plans to display the students to the mayor and his VIP entourage, urging them not to disgrace the Seminary. She wishes to hide that she forces students with family problems to work as servants. Sensei Dufarge suggests appointing Sara as class representative temporarily. Amelia finds that Lavinia has the class refusing to cooperate until Lottie and Ermengarde break ranks. Sara recites a poem from memory, demonstrating her French proficiency. This performance impresses the mayor, leading him to aid the Seminary, but it again annoys the Headmistress.
