  Mattis and Borka engage in a brutal Wild Beast Match to determine the leader of the united clans. They wrestle, punch, bite, and pull ears, exchanging the upper hand repeatedly until both are bruised. Borka nearly knocks Mattis unconscious, but Mattis eventually subdues him to win. Mattis allows Borka to keep his title and lead his men, calling him brother while asserting his own supremacy. Borka accepts, and the clans celebrate at Mattis' fort. Later, Mattis reveals Birk will succeed him because Ronja refuses to be a robber. Birk declares he will never be a robber, shocking his father. That night, Noddle-Pete expresses happiness that neither child wants to be a robber and shares a secret with Ronja.

Noddle-Pete appreciates the peace between clans while awaiting his end. Mattis worries about his health, but Lovis attributes it to old age. Noddle-Pete weakens despite Ronja's care and dies peacefully before winter. Mattis and the Mattis Robbers grieve deeply. In spring, Birk questions their future since they vowed never to become robbers. Ronja shares Noddle-Pete's secret: a silver cave shown by a gray dwarf he saved. Birk and Ronja choose to live in the Bear's Cave for spring, receiving Mattis' blessing. They venture out to enjoy their days, and Ronja greets the season with a shout.
