Mattis and Borka engage in a brutal Wild Beast Match to determine the leader of the united clans. They wrestle, punch, bite, and pull ears, exchanging the upper hand repeatedly until both are bruised. Borka nearly knocks Mattis unconscious, but Mattis eventually subdues him to win. Mattis allows Borka to keep his title and lead his men, calling him brother while asserting his own supremacy. Borka accepts, and the clans celebrate at Mattis' fort. Later, Mattis reveals Birk will succeed him because Ronja refuses to be a robber. Birk declares he will never be a robber, shocking his father.
