Souji identifies Ichi as a former gang member and warns him about Bakuro gang remnants returning to Edo. After recovering from illness during a month with Souji, Masa returns to Edo with Ichi, who realizes Ume sent him to meet Souji. Masa accidentally bumps into a ronin and is challenged to a duel using wooden swords, but he loses his nerve and flees. He later meets Yagi, who offers to train him. Before training begins, they visit the graves of people Yagi knew, including a man named Yaichi. Additionally, Matsu visits the merchant Kikuya, who once saved his life, and offers him money.
