The narrative highlights Tokugawa Tadanaga's inhumanity while ronin samurai roam the land. Kogan student Kondo Suzunosuke kills a ronin who disrespected the dojo. Impressed by his instincts, Kogan tasks Fujiki with teaching the novice true killing arts. Fujiki leads Kogan students to confront the ronin, challenging the first swordsman bare-handed to prepare for his Dai-Mokuroku. He defeats this opponent while his allies eliminate the rest, sparing one to spread news. Upon returning to his room, Fujiki discovers Suzunosuke's severed head hanging from the rafters.
