Kogan instructors discover Suzunosuke's corpse but lack clues about the killer, who used a powerful upward strike. They choose to frame the skilled swordsman Hikagi Jingorou for the murder. Munakata Shinpachirou volunteers to execute this plan and kills Hikagi. Upon returning, Munakata meets a deformed man with a sword on a bridge and identifies him as the true murderer. Subsequently, Munakata's head appears on the bridge alongside a fake sword as a challenge. Instructor Yamazaki Kurouemon seeks vengeance and kills two ronin at an inn who criticized the Kogan school. Yamazaki also encounters the mysterious swordsman, and his head is subsequently left on the bridge.
