Saki and Satoru return to the village after leaving Maria with Mamoru in the care of the Monster Rats. Saki faces interrogation by the Board of Education but is released following Tomiko’s intervention. Tomiko explains that Group 1 members received special treatment since childhood, sparing them from the hypnotic conditioning and memory alteration used to enforce obedience. She warns that the Board will likely order the destruction of both Mamoru and Maria, though she can delay this action for three days. Saki and Satoru then depart to retrieve the others before this deadline expires.
