In 1882, Sanshirou travels to Tokyo in search of a capable martial arts mentor. He encounters Yano, a judo expert who overwhelms 39 jujitsu experts in a single match. Impressed by Yano's abilities, Sanshirou chooses to train under him. He later develops feelings for Sayo Murai, whose father works as a martial arts teacher for the local police. At the same time, Sanshirou must contend with Higaki Gennosuke, a proficient jujitsu practitioner and his main competitor.
