Kirito and his childhood friend Eugeo live in Rulid village, where they are assigned the duty of felling the massive Gigas Cedar. While they work, Alice brings them homemade pie. During their meal, the trio discusses exploring a legendary cave located in the End Mountains. Eugeo worries that this journey might breach the Taboo Index, the strict laws governing their world. Kirito and Alice reassure him that their actions are permissible, easing his concerns. With his fears alleviated, Eugeo agrees to join them, and the three friends prepare to depart for their adventure.

Kirito wakes in Underworld with amnesia and reunites with amnesiac Eugeo

Kirito regains consciousness in the Underworld but lacks memory of his arrival. He encounters Eugeo, who also has no recollection of their past relationship. Together, they assist in the daily labor of cutting the Demon Tree. Kirito is subsequently brought to Eugeo's village, where he realizes he retains his sword skills from Sword Art Online. After finding shelter at a local church, Kirito resolves to investigate his current situation thoroughly before attempting to find a path back to the real world.

Kirito decides to travel to Centoria, the center of the Realm of Humanity in Underworld, and resolves to help Eugeo chop down the Gigas Cedar to free him from his Calling. As they take turns with the axe, Eugeo reveals the Blue Rose Sword found in the North Cave long ago, leading Kirito to believe it might be the key to felling the tree. Meanwhile, Selka, Alice’s younger sister, worries about Eugeo, who has not smiled since Alice was taken by the Axiom Church, and shares her concerns with Kirito.

Kirito and Eugeo defeat goblins and depart for Central Cathedral

Kirito helps Eugeo recover from shock as they battle goblins together. During the fight with the goblin leader, Eugeo suffers severe injuries, prompting both to recall shared memories. An angry Kirito slays the leader and urges the group to retreat. Following the combat, Kirito rescues Selka, who uses her magic to transfer some of Kirito’s energy to Eugeo, saving his life. During this process, Kirito experiences a vision of a woman stating she awaits them at the Central Cathedral. Once Eugeo heals, Kirito utilizes skill points earned from the battle to strike the Demon Tree heavily. Eugeo then requests swordsmanship lessons. After training, he successfully cuts down the Demon Tree, leading to a village celebration where he chooses swordsman as his occupation. Finally, Kirito and Eugeo leave for Central, aiming to locate Alice and return her home.

Kirito travels to the central city while Asuna and Suguha investigate Rath's involvement with Kazuto's hospitalization.

Kirito proceeds toward the central city within the Underworld, whereas Kazuto Kirigaya remains unconscious in a real-world hospital. Following Kikuoka’s directive, Kazuto is transferred to a facility with superior equipment. When Asuna and Suguha attempt to visit, they are denied entry and informed that no visitors are permitted until his recovery. Suspecting that Kazuto is located at Rath, the workplace where they research the Soul Translator, the group divides to uncover more information. Despite their efforts to investigate Rath, they fail to determine Kazuto’s exact location or whereabouts.

Linel and Fizel ambush Kirito and Eugeo, transporting them to the 50th floor to face Fanatio.

Linel and Fizel, novice cathedral students, reveal themselves as Integrity Knights and stab Kirito and Eugeo with poisoned daggers. They carry the immobilized pair to the 50th floor to present them to Fanatio, the vice-commander, to prove their worth. Upon arrival, Kirito reveals he anticipated the trap and protected himself, using the same daggers to restrain the attackers. He confronts Fanatio alone while Eugeo recovers. Once regained, Eugeo employs his Perfect Weapon Control Art to immobilize the knights, ending the immediate threat posed by Linel and Fizel.

Kirito and Eugeo ascend to the 80th floor to confront Alice after defeating Fanatio.

Kirito defeats Fanatio with Eugeo's assistance, critically wounding her. Defying Cardinal's orders to reserve special daggers for Alice and the Administrator, Kirito uses one to save Fanatio. Under Cardinal's care, Kirito and Eugeo take an elevator to the 80th floor where Alice awaits. Kirito confronts Alice to allow Eugeo an opportunity to use the dagger on her. During their battle, a hole opens in the exterior wall, sucking both Kirito and Alice through it. This sudden event leaves Eugeo in despair as his companions are pulled away from him.

Kirito and Alice cling to the church wall, with Alice reluctantly agreeing to cooperate so they can reach floor 95 for re-entry. During the ascent, Kirito tries to reveal Alice’s true past and the truth about the Administrator. They encounter minions from the Dark Territory disguised as statues on the higher levels and fight together to defeat them. Meanwhile, Eugeo continues his climb up the church until he arrives at a large bath on floor 90, where he encounters Bercouli Synthesis One.

Eugeo engages Bercouli Synthesis One in combat, utilizing the Blue Rose Sword's full memory release to encase them both in ice. He triggers the blade's secondary effect, which drains the life of all objects within the ice, betting that his own vitality exceeds Bercouli's. Eugeo attempts to persuade Bercouli that he was brainwashed by the Administrator and urges him to recall the Blue Rose Sword, only to learn that Bercouli was the one who slew the dragon in the cave. Prime Senator Chudelkin then arrives, turning Bercouli to stone and capturing Eugeo. Elsewhere, Kirito and Alice pause their ascent of the wall, where Kirito persuades Alice to listen to his story, revealing the truth regarding her past.

Alice rejects the Axiom Church authority after Kirito reveals the truth about the Underworld

Kirito explains the true nature of the Underworld, the Administrator, and the Integrity Knights to Alice, who becomes convinced of his honesty. Suspecting the Axiom Church, Alice vows to reject its authority but is halted by a seal in her right eye. Through sheer willpower, she forces herself to finish her declaration, causing her right eye to explode before she loses consciousness. Meanwhile, Eugeo awakens on the 100th floor. Before he can attack, Alice wakes up and puts Eugeo into a suggestive state, tricking him into dropping the protection of his Fluctlight's core.

Kirito battles Administrator while Eugeo sacrifices himself to aid the fight

Kirito confronts the Administrator alone as Eugeo lies dying and Alice remains unconscious. The Administrator utilizes SAO Sword Skills, claiming total system knowledge. Eugeo uses his blood to reform the Blue Rose Sword, allowing Kirito to dual-wield despite losing his right arm. Kirito severs the Administrator’s arm, inflicting critical damage. The Administrator attempts to leave the Underworld via the system console, but Chudelkin, having regained consciousness, clings to her. Both are consumed by lingering fire elements, resulting in their deaths. Eugeo bids Kirito farewell and passes away with Alice’s memory intact. Kirito accesses the console to contact the real world, learning the Ocean Turtle is under attack. Kikuoka orders him to take Alice to the World's End Altar before the connection fails. Kirito loses consciousness from fluctlight damage caused by a power surge at Rath.
