Ep. 1: Talking Bird Follows Mochi Shop Owner's Daughter and Chokes on New Year's Eve

Tamako Kitashirakawa, the daughter of a mochi shop owner, meets a talking bird named Dera Mochimazzwi while buying flowers at the market. The bird chooses to follow her home. Later that evening, Tamako and her younger sister Anko visit the public baths. Dera Mochimazzwi convinces Tamako's childhood friend, Mochizou Ooji, to bring him along to the baths as well. When New Year's Eve arrives, Dera has gained weight due to his love for mochi. He nearly chokes on a piece of mochi, causing the neighborhood to rush to his aid. In the commotion, the residents overlook Tamako's birthday.
