The Ushiromiya family convenes on Rokkenjima to discuss the inheritance of the ailing head, Kinzo. Battler, absent for six years, observes a new portrait of the "Golden Witch" Beatrice, whom his cousins George, Jessica, and Maria claim gifted Kinzo his wealth. Battler rejects the existence of witches and magic. As a typhoon approaches, Maria wanders into the garden to find a wilted rose marked by George. Left outside by her mother Rosa, Maria is discovered by Battler, Jessica, George, servant Kanon, and Rosa holding an umbrella she did not possess earlier, which she attributes to Beatrice.
