Ep. 5: Du Barry’s Plot Fails as Antoinette Asserts Dignity Against Court Intrigue
Aired on November 7, 1979

Du Barry manipulates the King against Antoinette, conspiring with Orleans to assassinate Prince Louis via a rigged hunting gun. The attempt fails when the weapon malfunctions harmlessly. Consequently, the King and Du Barry coerce Mercy into forcing Marie to change her behavior, warning that Austria-France relations may collapse. Antoinette reluctantly agrees to avoid war, but her aunts thwart this at a party due to their animosity toward Du Barry. On New Years Day, Antoinette delivers two sentences to Du Barry before fleeing in tears, declaring she will never speak to her again. Witnessing this resolve, Oscar vows to protect Antoinette with her life, admiring her dignity.
