High school friends Mei and Chiaki notice new classmate Natsuki observing them. Natsuki later explains the monkey prayer, a funeral gesture that can curse someone to death. Chiaki suffers a nightmare about her own funeral and angrily confronts Natsuki, who suggests offering three hairs in the dream to counter the curse. Chiaki repeats the nightmare, burns three hairs at the altar, and wakes safely. She then sees Mei performing the prayer toward her house before fleeing. The next day, Mei dies in a traffic accident. At the remembrance service, Chiaki hears rumors that Mei tried to steal her boyfriend. When it is her turn to pay respects, Chiaki offers the monkey prayer in return.
